Chapter Twenty-Three

Nathan

I watch Adalyn go down the hall in those tight satin pajama bottoms, her hips swaying from side to side. Her nipples were showing through the thin satin black top. It took everything in me to not stare at them all evening.

I run my hands down my face, groaning. “Fuck.”

I shift forward on the couch, leaning forward to hang my head. I have to get ahold of my thoughts. It’s inappropriate to think about her this way. Nothing can happen. She’s Sophia nanny, she’s much younger than me, and she just went through a traumatic event. She needs to heal. Now that part I can focus on.

I can help her. I can teach her self-defense, watch over her, protect her. That I can do. That isn’t crossing any morally grey lines. That’s the only acceptable route. Now if I can just get myself to believe it. Sophia has taken to her so much sooner than I thought she would. They both seem smitten with each other.

The thought of Sophia having a woman she can depend on eases some tension in my chest. It’s been fucking hard these past few years alone.

My ex really did a number on both of us. I met Shannon in residency at a bar. I was young, carefree, and just looking for a good time. She was a beautiful woman who caught my eye. We exchanged numbers and started dating. I wasn’t looking for anything serious and neither was she.

Everything was going well until she became pregnant a couple of months in. I’ll admit it wasn’t ideal. I was in the thick of residency, broke, and stressed. We didn’t know each other that well, but I figured we would figure it out.

She didn’t want the baby, but the thought of having my child aborted gutted me. We fought for weeks while I tried to convince her to have the baby. I would take care of both of them, no matter what. She didn’t want the responsibility; she didn’t want her body to change. She wanted to be able to go with her friends and party. Do all the things that every twenty-two-year-old wants to do. I understood it to an extent, but with a life growing inside of her, that was no longer the reality we were facing.

She finally agreed to keep the baby. I was so fucking relieved I almost cried. I fell to my knees and wrapped my arms around her, thanking her. Then I asked her to marry me. She agreed to that part easier than keeping the baby.

We planned a quick wedding because she didn’t want to be showing in her wedding dress. I would have agreed to just about anything at that point to make her happy. All I cared about was that both of them were happy and healthy.

We wed in less than three months. The first half of the pregnancy was a little bumpy but okay. She complained about pregnancy symptoms and the inconvenience of it all, but we dealt with it.
